We got into this business because we love making beer. Zack and I could talk for hours about a barrel-aged wild ale, a new fruit combination, or the lager that came out exactly the way we hoped. We still believe the beer has to be great.
But after years behind the doors at California Wild Ales, I’ve learned something else: people may walk in for a beer, but they come back because of how they feel when they’re here.
That’s especially true in Ocean Beach.
On any given day, someone might stop in after the farmers market with dinner from a neighboring restaurant. A family might grab a table and pull out a game. A regular might come in alone and leave having talked to half the room. Someone visiting San Diego might ask the person beside them what they should do while they’re in OB. Before long, they’re sharing stories over a flight.
You can’t put that on a tap list. But it’s a huge part of what we’re here to make.
The people behind the bar matter
A good beer tender can tell you what’s pouring. A great one pays attention. They notice when you’re curious about sours but unsure where to start. They remember your favorite lager. They make a first-time visitor feel as comfortable as someone who’s been coming in for years.
Our team brings their own personalities to the room, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. They’re a big reason strangers strike up conversations here. Hospitality isn’t a script we hand someone before a shift. It’s the small, human moments that make people feel welcome.
A place for whatever brings you together
Some nights it’s trivia or Radio Bingo. Some days it’s a Bears game on the big screen, complete with Chicago-style hot dogs and a room full of people shouting at the TV. Other times, nothing is scheduled. You just need a place to meet a friend, bring the kids, sit with your dog, or take a break after walking around Ocean Beach.
Those quieter afternoons count just as much as the big events.
I think people are looking for places where they can spend time together without having to make a whole production out of it. A tasting room can be that place if you make room for people to settle in and be themselves.
Ocean Beach makes this possible
There’s a reason California Wild Ales feels different in OB than it would anywhere else. This neighborhood has always had its own rhythm and its own strong sense of community. People support the businesses they know. They show up for local events. They introduce you to their friends. And they let you know what they think.
We get to be one small part of that. Whether we’re hosting a neighborhood gathering, welcoming people in after the farmers market, or seeing familiar faces at the bar, the best moments here happen because people choose to show up for each other.
Of course, we’re going to keep making the best beer we can. We’re going to keep experimenting with wild ales, brewing crisp beers you want another pint of, and trying things that sound a little strange until you taste them.
But the beer is the invitation. The people are what make California Wild Ales feel like home.
